A community in Southern California is in mourning after a selfless young father was stabbed to death trying to protect a woman and her toddler from a mugger.
Troy Cansler, 47, was fatally stabbed in the parking lot of a grocery store in Yucaipa on Sunday night after he rushed to help 26-year-old mom Krystina Hanrahan, the Press-Enterprise reported.
Hanrahan had just finished shopping at a Stater Bros. on Yucaipa Blvd. with her 2-year-old daughter and was walking to her car when a mugger ambushed her from behind and tried to snatch her purse, authorities said.
The young mom struggled with her attacker and was stabbed five times, twice in the arm and three times in the chest, authorities said.

Cansler witnessed the attack and chased after the thug, authorities said.
The brave ironworker caught up to the thief in the parking lot of a nearby Jack in the Box restaurant.
The two struggled and Cansler was stabbed in the neck.

He died later at a local hospital.
The alleged mugger, Vincent DeLeon, 26, was arrested a short time later.
He pleaded not guilty to murder and attempted murder charges on Tuesday.
